Tolpa Jams Volume 1

Tolpa Jams Volume 1

I'd like to talk about some songs that have been stuck in my head the past month or so. I wouldn't say any of these are particular deep cuts, so this isn't an invitation to any particular subculture but rather I feel like many of my friends don't share my music taste so I am shouting this at no one in particular.

[ Playlist with all the vids] (Epilepsy warning for a lot of these)

As my brain continues to rot, Internetcore has becoming more and more central to my identity. I thought it would only be part of myself that I keep online, but as I go to more and more raves I feel more comfortable embodying it in person. I mentioned before I went to see Pinkii and Robopup recently, and I'm hoping to see more of the niche artists I like in person like Dolldamage. Ninajirachi has a show early next year but the tickets are already sold out, which I'm really upset about. She falls into a niche of early 2000s nostalghia (iPod Touch) that I find genuine. I don't think it comes from the lyrics, but rather the visuals she commissions for her music videos... I don't think a poser would have a song about wanting to fuck her computer . Delete's rapid-fire PowerPoint presentation really soothes me; I find the overstimulation and ability to find new patterns or intentionality in the vast amounts of images interesting. Everytime I watch it I notice something new. These kind of videos remind me of the trend with Metric - Lost Kitten of using shimatsuku's art to represent losing a former loved one's memory. I love seeing the new versions pop up like male and female vocals or a punk guitar acoustic cover (and vtubers for some reason); very reminiscent how Lag Train had everyone creating their own version (the best one being the Minecraft noteblock one of course) . I love how community can form around not only the song but also how it's represented visually. I highly recommend all of Ninajirachi's music videos, each one is special in their own way.

God I fucking love drum n bass. Anything with this fast BPM backtrack gets me going, but the real hit here is the vocals. Her voice repeats, it cuts, it backtracks it's chopped up - it has everything. I want to sing along, kinda, but I feel like it's more stimming? I like trying to repeat the noises that she's making, but I don't feel like I'm making a cover I feel like I'm referencing it. HigherhigherhigherthanIcanstand! I feel like I'm hearing a distant transmission from a wandering astronaut all alone among the stars. The vocals almond remind me of Brittney?? Maybe that's crazy but there's a kind of "Toxic" to this. Also, very few cases of English sad lyrics to a party backtrack - there's so many JP vocaloid songs like this. Honestly I'm not sure if this is vocaloid? I don't think it is.

Also the visuals are stellar! This is one of those AMVs that inspire me to try to animate again, even if it's always way too much work I smile admiring the handicraft. This one is packed full of small lil details and references! Like at 1:08 the repeating angel visuals are setup like the Lain anime intro! I love AMVs that forego shading for flat shades; works super well for the Angel OC and I love the chromatic abberation and CRT effects. Absolutely wonderful.

This is in a class of songs where I can't put on too often or the effect will wear off. It's a precious song; reminds me a lot of Joywave and other bands I'd put on at 2 am practicing my lines. bbno$ has a great history with commissioning artists to make MVs like sashley's, so it's really neat to see him star in his own! Well, I think he had an agency help him with this? Not sure, either way I love the intentionality with this. There's many great compositions; the doodle at the top of this page is a screengrab from 1:26 and I am shameless about it. The b&w aesthetic reminds me a lot of View from the Afternoon; the lighting in both is wonderful. A closer comparison would actually be Shake Me Down for me - they both have this breakdown where the audio almost sounds like it's giving up and is crying. Visually they're similar too with the montages of early life that indicates reflection. Shake Me Down is my favourite music video, and I can't listen to it without crying. Again, rapidly flashing images gets me emotional, because I can't help but see my own life flash before my eyes. bbno$ also hit on a soft spot for me with a reverb crowd singing (also at 1:26 and 2:05) - there were a few mixes on the new Avalanche album like that but I don't feel like grabbing anything specifically.

So yes people like me do ever feel this way :)

I feel like the last three songs have been super down so I wanted to mention I'm not going to kill myself. I've been obsessed with the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah self-titled album. I feel like it's something I missed while growing up and being in my Modest Mouse indie rock phase; I got introduced to that at 12 by some friends I made in Minecraft who were in college. ALWAYS WITH THE MUSIC VIDEOS WITH TAMI!! I LIKE WHAT I LIKE OKAY. i think this is a super cute MV it has a story and I'm usually against any music videos with downtime or any audio that doesn't come from the actual song... but this is so fucking cute? The tiktok AI joke doesn't bother me on rewatching and I have no clue why. I like how it speeds up and it shows the grind of this guy's life and the whimsy of looking through people's computers and the story that emerges from it. It's cute!! I love those music videos of friends just hanging out like Ramen Waitress . There's a lot of low budget music videos that I prefer to anything else. Also biased that one has skateboarding - any song can be improved by putting it over B roll skate tricks.

It took a looooong time for me to get addicted to Deathbrain. One of my friends kept hyping it up but none of the songs really felt like their own piece? It all meshed together. It's only now that don't have Spotify and have been putting albums onto my phone that I really get it. The soft drums and bass in this entire genre have been really nice backdrops to some thoughts I have while I write these Doodles n Dreams. I've been trying to discover artists on other platforms like Soundcloud or bandcamp; Gnb Chilli still remains my fav braekcore producer. Emotionally unavailable will always be one of my tops, I really like them taking an old song and remixxing it, but I've been moreso feeling like Vanquish . Almost feels like Ace Combat? Maybe I'm delulu right now but those stuttering audio cuts gets me everytime, man. I've never been a huge Miku or Teto fan (like, the merch? I love Monitoring and Mesmerizer but I don't consider myself a fan OF those vocaloids if that makes sense), but I absolutely love two: Namitape [who will not be operating under that name anymore :<<<< ] and Angelsynth . Extremely ethereal and welcoming, but tragic in their own ways that makes my heart become soft. I used to be big into Kikuo, Edo, and Mili but haven't been playing Limbus Company or really been in those spheres in a while.

Gah, there's so much more to talk about ;------; I have a close connection to all of these songs - I implore you to put an album on your phone when you're out. I feel like I didn't get a lot of these songs until I did. Being at home and having the ability to actually watch the music videos has helped me appreciated new stuff I discover and cherish it rather than being on discover algorithm-recommendation slop. A lot of these songs came from friends and they mean so much more that the link came from them, even if I didn't hear what they liked about it.

Fall in love with these songs, and love me by proxy, OK?
